Bosanac has requested for a ban on importing waste to Croatia from other EU member states if there is a lack of capacity to process it.

He assessed that almost all political groups in the EP recognized the importance of the Gospić issue, and that the EPP and HDZ failed to mislead them by changing the title of the plenary debate

Strasbourg, September 17, 2026 - “Despite the attempt by the European People's Party and the HDZ to dilute the debate and obscure its cause—the dumping of 37,000 tons of illegal, hazardous waste in Gospić—by changing its title, members from almost all groups in the European Parliament spoke today during the plenary session precisely about Gospić, the political responsibility for this ecocide, and the measures the EU can take to remediate the damage and prevent such cases from recurring.”, assessed Gordan Bosanac, a member of the Možemo party.

The debate was held at Bosanac's initiative, and he emphasized that, as expected, almost all HDZ members focused primarily on diverting attention from their party's political responsibility for the damage caused to the health of people, animals, land, and the environment in Gospić.

In his speech at the plenary session, Bosanac pointed out that the criminal ecocide in Gospić has put human health in direct danger, precisely due to the political decisions of the ruling party, which abolished the requirement to notify waste imports, just as they abolished the Waste Registry. 

The result of this, he stated, is that our institutions today do not know the whereabouts of nearly one million tons of waste that enters our country every year.

He asked the European Commissioner for Health, Olivér Várhelyi (from Viktor Orbán's Fidesz party), how it is possible that waste import oversight can be deregulated at the national level while still remaining in compliance with the Waste Shipment Regulation. 

Since the Government of the Republic of Croatia has failed for months to resolve this case of illegal hazardous waste import and ecocide within the Schengen area, he called on the Commission to continue monitoring the case. 

In conclusion, he requested that the European Union adopt new and clear rules stating that any member state lacking the capacity for waste recovery must no longer be allowed to import such waste, because, as in Gospić, it will end up in the water and soil. 

“The people of Gospić and Croatia will not be the EU's dumping ground, nor can they wait another minute”, he stated at the end of his address.
