More than 1 million citizens supported safe and affordable abortion in the EU

An incredible group of activists through the initiative My voice, My choice handed over 1.2 million signatures to the European Commission on Monday (among them 65,963 from Croatia!) demanding that the right to choose to terminate  pregnancy be guaranteed throughout the European Union.

In Croatia, we all witnessed the painful case of Mirela Čavajda, who, despite the legal right, was denied an abortion. The conscientious appeals of medical staff continue to make abortion unavailable in a number of hospitals in Croatia.

Today in Europe, more than 20 million women still do not have access to safe abortion. Women in Poland continue to die because of the denial of health care. Many fall into financial difficulties because abortion is not free. Thousands have to travel long distances or opt for unsafe alternatives because there are not enough providers. So it's no surprise that people across the EU have responded to this initiative.

Last year I signed for this initiative myself, and now I will fight for it through the Petitions Committee of which I am a member. And I was especially pleased to meet in Brussels with Severina, who strongly supported this initiative 💜
