The European Commission has proposed a financial mechanism that would make safe and accessible abortion available to everyone in the EU!
Two years ago, brave and persistent woman from Slovenia Nika Kovač launched the initiative My Voice My Choice.
Why? Women in Poland die, in Malta they are severely punished, and in Italy the right to abortion exists only on paper. The situation is no different in Croatia, where women like Mirela Čavajda have to cross the border to exercise their right when their own lives are in danger.
The initiative uses a rarely successful tool: the European Citizens' Initiative and collects 1.2 million signatures from citizens across the EU, and in Croatia over 65 thousand signatures - seven times more than was officially required! The European Parliament then clearly and loudly supports the initiative with a resolution.
Today we are witnessing a historic decision that, for the first time at the level of the European Union, sends a message that women really have the right to choose and their own autonomy. This is a civilizational advancement with which the EU is taking a symbolic but extremely important step forward. This is a great victory for women all over Europe. This is a great victory for EU citizens and a good example of how we can change the EU 'from the bottom up'.
