Our senior citizens are not “the past”, but our experience, knowledge and dignity that we must protect 👵👴

I participated in the event 'Towards the UN Convention on the Rights of Older Persons: What is the role of the European Union? ', where we discussed with colleagues from the European Parliament, the European Commission, Member States, the UN and civil society the EU's role in creating the first UN Convention on the Rights of Older Persons.

At the debate, I pointed out a simple but important point: we should not treat our senior citizens as if they were “about to die.” Every person who retires has a whole life behind them and a story that could fit in a book.

We can and must learn from them.

The aging of the population is one of the greatest social changes of our time. More and more of us are living longer, but too often older people continue to face discrimination, unequal access to services and insufficient protection of rights. The EU must play an active and clear role in shaping it because dignity, equality and human rights must have no age limit.

Together with my colleagues, I supported the joint statement calling for stronger EU engagement and the debate in the European Parliament on the occasion of the International Day of Older Persons.
