The European Parliament has decided that the case of Dajla will not be closed!

The Committee on Petitions unanimously decided that the European Commission must continue to investigate the project in the Dajla-Belvedere and Dajla-Carigador bays, despite a proposal to close the case. Such unanimity is rarely seen in the Committee and is a great victory of the civic initiative from Istria and Možemo Istra.

The representative of the Initiative Matea Šverko is definitely responsible for this, as she defended the case in Brussels and managed to explain the long-standing struggle part of the population is waging against the construction of a new port.

Citizens are not asking for a halt in development, but for a mere respect for the EU law. Three port projects in the same small bay have been assessed separately, even though they are located within the Natura 2000 area “Western Istria Aquatic Area”, which raises serious questions about compliance with European environmental legislation.

As a member of the Committee on Petitions, I am proud that we have taken this subject to a European level. Citizens deserve transparency and clear answers, and the EU institutions have an obligation to ensure equal application of the law in all Member States.
