The Gospić Case in the European Parliament
Brussels, September 9, 2026. - Možemo! Member of the European Parliament Gordan Bosanac has requested, through his political group, the Greens/EFA, that the case of illegal waste dumping and the now-proven groundwater contamination near the Gospić landfill be discussed during a plenary debate at the European Parliament session scheduled for September 14–17.
For the inclusion of Bosanac’s request for a debate titled “Protecting human health from PFAS ‘forever chemicals’ and other toxic substances: the recent case of contaminated groundwater in Croatia”, the meeting of the Conference of Presidents of political groups in the European Parliament, taking place today, September 9, in Brussels, ahead of next week’s plenary session in Strasbourg, will be crucial.
“The criminal case of illegal hazardous waste dumping in Gospić must be discussed in the European Parliament at an appropriate time because this is also a European problem. This is an opportunity for all Members of the European Parliament from Croatia to raise awareness—especially our colleagues from the HDZ and Domovinski pokret, who are part of the European People’s Party (EPP) and the European Conservatives and Reformists (ECR) groups—about what is happening in the EU regarding illegal waste. I therefore expect support from all MEPs and their respective groups. The proven groundwater contamination near the landfill and the resulting dangers to human health, lives, and nature demonstrate just how dangerous the deregulation of waste management and the political corruption that enabled it in Croatia truly are, and how long-term the consequences of such political decisions will be.”, said Bosanac, adding: “Croatia must not become an illegal dumping ground for the European Union’s hazardous waste, a point I will emphasize during the plenary debate if my request receives the necessary support from the majority of political groups in the EP.”
Furthermore, as a member of the EP Committee on Petitions (PETI), Bosanac has requested an urgent procedure for the petition submitted to the committee by the citizens of Gospić. If the majority of political groups approve the urgency—a decision to be made this Thursday—the petition from the “Gospić is our home” initiative will bypass the standard waiting list. MEP Bosanac has also proposed that the PETI Committee visit Gospić as part of its fact-finding missions regarding the petition.
“In that case, the citizens of Gospić would have the opportunity to present the details of the situation to Members of the European Parliament and the European Commission at the next committee meeting in September or October. By doing so, we want to alert the European Parliament and the European Commission to the deep-seated problems related to waste management in the EU, despite the extensive EU legislation in this area, and demand that the European Commission get involved in resolving the ecocide in Gospić.”, he concluded.
